What is ozone?

The basics of ozone: what it is, how it works and why it is used in care and health.

What is ozone?

Ozone (O₃) is a natural gas made of three oxygen atoms. It forms in nature during thunderstorms and under ultraviolet radiation – it is also behind that fresh smell after rain.

A short history

Nikola Tesla patented the first ozone generator in 1896. During the First World War ozone was used to treat wounds for its antibacterial properties, and today Germany and other countries include it in modern medical practice.

How does it work?

Ozone is a strong oxidant. In contact with bacteria, viruses and fungi it damages their membranes, while stimulating tissue oxygen supply and activating the body’s natural defence mechanisms.

Ozonated oil – why?

Ozone cannot be stored as a gas, so it is bound to the unsaturated fatty acids of olive oil, forming stable ozonides. This way ozone stays active and can be applied safely to the skin or taken in capsules.
